Released in 1984, written by Wing Leng Liu & Directed by Kirk Wong, FLASH! Future Kung Fu (Originally titled as ‘Health Warning, Mr.Digital’) is a Science Fiction/ Kung Fu film taking place in a cyberpunk China where an organization of Chinese Neo Nazis strive to dominate everything in their path. Our main mustached character comes across a lost girl and takes the girl to her mom who entertains the Neo Nazis in their druggy, smoky nightclub with arcade machines. This leads to trouble as this evil bitch of a woman kills off some of the main character’s friends in odd, yet seductive ways & leads our mustached hero to take down the Nazi complex.
The whole film then flashes through quick cuts of training & fights against the Nazis. There’s barely any semblance of plot, coherence, character development, there’s almost little to no dialogue & none of the characters have names to remember them by. Though despite those flaws, the film has well coordinated fight scenes, neat set design for a low budget production & a synth soundtrack that would put ‘Vangelis’ to shame.
The film is a far out experience that must be seen to believe.
Luckily, the ‘WuTang Collection’ YouTube page has the film in it’s entirety, complete with it’s original yet poor dubbing. It’s a film that isn’t perfectly made, but doesn’t drone on with the 76 minute run time. Fights, Cyberpunk aesthetic, Futuristic 80’s ladies, weird avant-garde sequences, Future drugs, Arcades & watching Hong Kong Nazis get torn a new one. If that’s not cult cinema brilliance, then I have no clue what is.
