“When nuclear war shatters the nation, America’s only hope for survival is the DOOMSDAY WARRIOR!” That is the tagline that prepares you for an epic action film. But this isn’t a movie, it’s a book which has the workings of being an awesome 80’s post apocalyptic, exploitation film with it’s creative tagline & nicely hand painted artwork of a fist holding a strange blade with a mushroom cloud in the background. Forget ‘Hooked on Phonics’ & to hell with those ‘Read an hour a day’ promos, this is how you get guys hooked into reading. Makes me wish I found this book sooner, like 17 years earlier.
Published in 1984 from Zebra Books & written by Ryder Stacy (A pseudonym for Ryder Syversten & Jan Stacy), Bloody America is the 4th in the Doomsday Warrior series, ending it’s 19 book run in 1991 with ‘America’s Last Defense’.
Bloody America begins with expository backstory to get the new readers acquainted with the universe Ryder Stacy had established in previous books. In 2089, America , as well as the rest of the world, has been nuked & dominated by Russian communists who enslaved most of America. Ted Rockson (A.K.A The Doomsday Warrior) & his band of free fighters fight the deadly war to become free from the Commies & bring America back to the prosperous country it once was. In this particular installment, Ted Rockson & his sidekick Archer are caught by sadistic communist soldiers & sent to Moscow to sign a treaty by Primer Vassily (The leader of Russia) to surrender their power in order to establish what he considers ‘Peace’. In typical martyr fashion, The Doomsday Warrior declines, fights to cripple Russia’s hidden missile system & strives to get to the U.S alive. In their adventures they come across strange mutant creatures with the physique of ‘Goro’ from Mortal Kombat & probably the most brilliant concept I’ve ever read about in the form of hooded Russian subway dwellers who speak like beatnicks, listen to jazz & modified their instruments to be deadly weapons powered by sound. Name me a book that has done something like this?
As you can tell the book is pretty hammy in the style of a 1950’s pulp, radiation is nothing but a homo-superior supplement & you’d be bombarded with fun 80’s action lines like “Join us, men who are nothing. Join us or die!” (p.103). But often times you would find some well written & poetic lines such as “What the man Rockson was about to face would be the battle of his life, pitting the very elemental forces of his life, pitting very elemental forces of the universe against one another- a war between the darkness & the light.” (p.270).
Overall, this book is a brilliant piece of pulpy 80’s action goodness full of hard-on jingoism, bare fisted ultra violence & plenty of boobs to read about. This is like the R-Rated action movie every kid in the playground raves about & the only way to see it is if you snuck into the Cinema. You may have to trudge through the bins of your local bookstore to find a copy, which is either exciting or a hassle; depends if you’re desperate to read this testosterone filled masterpiece. Luckily ‘GraphicAudio’ has the audio books for sale which is worth the price if you’re too busy to open a page. Whether you read it or listen to it, 'Doomsday Warrior: Bloody America’ is an book to behold.
