Now I'm not a big fan of these Marvel movies, I'm behind the curve on these things. The only two I watched & one I enjoyed immensely would be 'Captain America: The First Avenger'. What can I say, it's pulp adventure done with better CGI than that 'Sky Captain' movie from 2004, that shit looked like a Canadian Sci-Fi channel movie. I don't feel Marvel movies are terrible films & I'm not stopping you folks from watching these films. Actually my problem in this case is not with Marvel or Disney, it's with the theater chain 'AMC theaters'. AMC isn't a Grindhouse, that's obvious, they're as corporate as they can get, which surprises me when they decide to re-release stuff like 'Taxi Driver' and 'Total Recall (1990)'. As I was about to say, I'd understand this decision if they were trying recreate the grindhouse theater experience because being open 24/7 & playing nothing but the double bill of sleaze all night long is what their business was built on. Even then the few Grindhouses had closing hours. So when it was announced they a few theaters (17 of them) would be open for 72 hours just to screen this 'Avengers: End Game' (Probably even pushing aside screenings for other flicks just to make room for more Avengers), I was angry. AMC has business hours, even when they do their midnight screenings they close up after that screening. 72 hours, open just for a fucking movie about a bunch of CGI on screen? Are you fucking kidding me? Why not just continue screening the movie for seven months rather than just pulling the film or tossing it into the cheapo screenings after a week? A three hour movie isn't anything new, look at all those movies from the 60's. In 1999 we got 'Magnolia' which was a three hour movie (An awesome three hour movie). I understand the need to make it into an event, but why make AMC staff suffer? Depending on who's in charge, I doubt there are a ton of supervisors or managers who will let the staff choose what shift to work on because everyone knows very few folks would choose the shift dead center in the butthole of early morning. I should know, I work the third shift & we are the most understaffed of the whole workplace, yet these fuckers on top feel the need to leave us with a heavy workload. We got shit to do during the day, it's bad enough I always got to be woken up by the fucking outdoor activity when I should be getting more hours of sleep! Who in their right mind would go to a screening of Endgame at 3am in the morning? I don't see families waking up at 3am to watch a movie. Stoners..........maybe, but that is a very very very very VERY niche audience. If it were a big enough audience then the world would be a beautiful place. I don't see this as a benefit to anyone. Sure, it will get a 1% profit increase for AMC, but at the end of the day it's not like there will be crowds at 2am like there will be during the middle of the day or morning. 'Hunger Games' was considered an event full of mass hype, me & my older sister went after opening day & it wasn't packed, but it was enough to fill the front row. I must reiterate here, this will only happen to a percentage of the theaters scattered throughout the nation, but I pity those theater branches. Most of the movie going public is made up of idiots, so if this bullshit somehow becomes a successful business strategy & a huge money maker then of course AMC is going to extend this to all their theater branches with all their other movies they feel need to be 72 hour events. Good god, imagine a 72 hour event for an Adam Sandler movie. That's just sad.
I'm not going to sit here & tell all of you to boycott, go during the day or to go to some other theater (As much as I'd love to) because theaters are going the way of the dodo at this point. Also it's pretty difficult to find a nearby theater. I've already told you guys that the theater near me is two cities over so making a trip has to be a commitment that would be worth the hour trip. Alot of you are hyped for this new Avengers movie, but I don't get this amount of hype that would make a chain be open for 72 hours like a back alley hooker. At least with hookers you get a reach around. It's the last Avengers film of the 3rd phase, not the last Avengers movie that will ever be made. Just the last of that arc is what I infer from this. What I ask of all of you is to be kind, courteous & be aware that many of these folks there might be working triple the overtime. You're all there to have a good time, they're all there because they need to pay off some bills & not starve or get fired. It's too early in the fucking morning to deal with the bullshit, so don't start any. Even if you are going to watch Avengers at 2am, I still urge you not to be an asshole & roam about the place (However empty it may be) like you own the joint. Don't give anybody a shitty attitude, don't go causing a mess &......You know what? This shouldn't just apply to AMC theaters at that 72 hour window, it should apply everywhere & anywhere at anytime! Don't be a fucking asshole!
That's my end message for not just end game, but for living life.
Take that home with you.
